Polycystic ovary syndrome/disorder is a hormonal disorder that affects women in their reproductive phase. About 8 in 10 women are affected by this condition. It involves an imbalance of hormones and a disruption in the endocrine system. It can be caused by a combination of dietary habits, stress, genetic and other environmental factors. Women with PCOS tend to have higher levels of androgens and insulin resistance. Some of the common symptoms are irregular periods, excess hair growth, hair loss, acne and/or weight gain. These symptoms tend to affect the individual’s self-esteem and confidence and can lead to depression and anxiety.
In Yoga, we use specific targeted asanas for the reproductive system like Koṇāsana and Mahāmudrā. At Yoga Samvidaa, we set short term and long-term goals. Based on the individual, the short-term goals would be regularizing their menstrual cycles, clearing their skin from acne, and destressing the individual. Long term goals would include reduction of weight if needed, optimizing hair growth, and leading a healthier and more holistic lifestyle.
