Aging is a natural process and one undergoes various changes in their health. One of the most commonly seen symptoms is a decline in joint health due to various factors such as arthritis, wear and tear, obesity, reduced cartilage thickness, nutritional deficiencies, lower production of synovial fluid production and/or osteoporosis.
There are several yogic tools that we can incorporate to improve one’s bone health. At Yoga Samvidaa, our practice is modified to fit the movement within the individual’s comfort zone. Dynamic movements are used to mitigate pain and static postures strengthens the joints. Usage of props such as stools, blocks and wall can be used to aid the individual’s practice. We also focus on better posture and proper structural alignment of the body to prevent further misalignment that can contribute to pain and discomfort. Dietary changes like avoiding foods that are high in Vāta helps in diminishing the pain. Sesame oil application has proven to be helpful in lubricating the joints.
